The Nijntje museum in Utrecht reopens, and it is way more accessible for everyone

Recently, the Nijntje Museum in Utrecht has reopened its doors after a significant renovation. This children’s museum, dedicated to the adventures of the famous rabbit Miffy, protagonist of Dick Bruna’s books, has undergone a significant expansion and now features new themed areas specifically designed for younger visitors, such as John’s farm and Poppy Pig’s shop. Additionally, new easily accessible facilities for children with disabilities have been introduced. Infact, the arrangement and interactive exhibits are designed to be secure and child-friendly and every area is reachable by strollers and standard wheelchairs. Children with physical disabilities can access educational materials provided in tactile formats, raised relief, contrasting colours, scented items, and accompanied by explanations in Dutch Sign Language.

The first book dedicated to the Miffy rabbit dates back to 1955 and was created by the Dutch writer and illustrator Dick Bruna. Born in 1927 and passed away in 2017, Bruna had a long and prolific career, during which he published over 200 children’s books. However, he is mainly remembered for his 30 books dedicated to the character of Miffy, which have become true classics of Dutch children’s literature.
Located in the city of Utrecht, the museum is a tribute to Bruna’s life and work, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the story of Miffy in a completely new way. Thanks to the support of Mercis BV, VriendenLoterij, and various local partners, this expansion and renovation have been made possible, now offering an active discovery experience through play, with visual, olfactory, and tactile stimuli.
